Burton House
Chloë's Restaurant and Bar is situated in historic Burton
House, originally built by Michael Arthur Bass as a
Liberal Club. Diners can enjoy the magnificent ceilings and proportions
of one of the finest Victorian buildings in the Midlands, all
refurbished in a contemporary style.
Michael Arthur Bass provided the Liberal Association with club
rooms in 1882 and in 1894 Bass (by then Lord Burton) built the
clubhouse that now houses Chloë's on the corner of George
Street and Guild Street. The building was designed in a French
Renaissance style by Durward, Brown and Gordon of London and
still retains the elaborate 16th century style plaster work. The
Liberal Club closed in 1944, but re-opened as the George Street
Social Club which survived until 1987. The building was then
used as offices before being renovated and opening as Chloë's
Restaurant & Bar in early 2005.
Although starting his political career as a Liberal, the party's
support for the temperance movement made membership somewhat untenable
for the country's biggest brewer! Mr Bass changed his political
allegiance and defeated plans for the compulsory shutting down
of the brewing industry without compensation.
Fortunately for us we can still enjoy the fruits of Burton's
brewing industry in Chloë's Lounge Bar.
